Sometimes it's the little actions we take that make all the difference. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, Janice Raping could not have anticipated the reaction she received for her small act of kindness. Her patient was having difficulty moving around and completing chores like washing dishes. After a few visits, she decided to bring him a pack of disposable utensils and paper plates to make his meals a bit easier. He was so happy and surprised that he began to cry while expressing gratitude for her kindness. He passed away less than a week later, but Janice is grateful that her simple act went a long way to making his last meals easier.

Janice was born in the Philippines and came to Hawaii at the age of 11. She grew up on the island of Lanai and attended UH Maui Community College. After obtaining her nursing degree, she moved to Oahu and worked at Queens Medical Center as a nurse's aide and worked in the Discharge Planning Unit upon receiving her license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

While working at Queens, Janice cared for a few hospice patients within her unit and found the experience rewarding. "It was an honor and privilege to be able to help them transition during their last moments from this life to the next," explained Janice. She felt that she could use her nursing skills to focus attention on hospice patients, so when an opening at a nonprofit hospice came up, she jumped at the opportunity. Janice eventually found her way to Islands Hospice and has been with our organization for almost seven years.

During her spare time, she enjoys taking early morning walks with her husband of 19 years and spending time with her four children. She has been recently tending to her succulents in her garden. She also attends church at St. Elizabeth and watches her son Noah play basketball. During her downtime, she likes completing Sudoku puzzles and watching HGTV or Food Network.

"I am so blessed to be working with such an amazing team that is so supportive and always there to lend a helping hand," reflected Janice. "I'm also grateful to be a part of this wonderful organization that provides exceptional end-of-life care, not only to the patient but the entire family as well."
