Hospice Hero
Islands Hospice is highlighting several of our social workers in honor of National Social Work Month. Melissa R. is a licensed social worker within our palliative care program. Separate from our hospice care program, palliative care helps those with serious illnesses who are still pursuing curative treatment to find comfort and improve their quality of life.
Melissa provides an additional layer of support to our patients and their families, helping them to understand their treatment plans and navigate relevant resources and obtain medical, emotional, and spiritual assistance. Get to know Melissa with this brief Q&A:
Why did you become a social worker?
I became a social worker to be the kind of adult that my 5-year-old self would have looked up to and relied on for support.
What personal experiences or values do you bring to your role?
I find that my human-centered approach to care brings great value to my role as a Palliative Social Worker.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
I find it most rewarding when I visibly witness the lifting of grief or anxiety from my patients or their loved ones' shoulders. It means that I have done something to better someone else's life.
What motivates you to continuously learn and grow in your
role as a social worker?
I am most motivated by my colleagues and team. Seeing their
passion and dedication motivates me to do better every day.
What advice would you give to someone considering a
career in social work?
My advice for those considering a career in social work is to specialize in an area that you are truly passionate about — whether it’s a population or organizational. If you enjoy your work, you will find reward in what you do, and the quality of your care will show that.
