Maui Corner
How long have you worked at Islands Hospice?
Three and a half years.
What do you do at Islands Hospice?
Primarily, I handle the intake here on Maui, but I am more than willing to do what I need to do within my training as intake, community liaison, and medical assistant.
Describe a typical workday
The majority of my days are typically spent in the office answering the phones, taking referrals, ordering DME for patients, ordering supplies for office and nursing staff, contacting and scheduling maintenance needs for the office and the IPU. Still, if needed, I will be out in the community either meeting with families, doing in-services, meeting with physicians, and doing what I can to continue our growth in the community.
Have you held any other positions here?
Community Liaison.
What is your favorite part about working at Islands Hospice?
How rewarding it is.
Do you have any unforgettable memories/stories from your time working here?
There are many, but there is a special one that will always hold a place in my heart. I met an amazing woman that went through one bad turn after another in such a short period of time. I was drawn to her from the moment I heard her story to the day she took her last breath.
What’s your background?
I was born and raised on Oahu, the youngest of three girls. I grew up in Waipahu. I've been working in the medical field since 1993 when I moved to Maui. I began as a medical records clerk for about two and a half years, then I decided to go back to school to become a Medical Assistant. I worked as an MA from 1996 to 2017 when I was blessed with the opportunity to join the Island Hospice ohana.
Is there anything about your background that inspired you to work at Islands Hospice/in hospice care?
I have my sisters Myra and Mylyn to thank for that. They were both already working for Islands Hospice when I joined the company.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, it's all about family. I have four children, so they are my priority. Chillin’ at home, going to the beach or pool, shopping and going to the park are some of the things that we enjoy doing as a family, but with current changes due to COVID, we've begun to do a little more "crafts." I've started sewing and attempting to make furniture from wood pallets.
Is there anything else you want to share with your colleagues?
I am honored to be a part of the Islands Hospice ohana, and I hope to be able to meet everyone on the Oahu team in person soon.
