Volunteer Spotlight: Susan Liu

Volunteer Spotlight
Volunteering with Islands Hospice is the perfect match for Susan. She delves into creating arts and crafts for our patients: painting roses in February, floral arrangements in March, and bunnies and stuffed Easter eggs in April. She is looking forward to the special Mother’s Day project in May.
Susan was also an enormous help making ti leaf lei and serving food during our annual Day of Remembrance Ceremony. During the pandemic, she stepped up in a big way and was instrumental to our mask-making efforts, braving the long lines for materials and sewing and delivering masks to our staff to keep everyone safe.
One of Susan’s most special memories from her time volunteering with Islands Hospice involved a chance run-in with a relative. During a few of her visits, she heard a familiar voice down the hall. She later learned the laughter was from an aunt, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time. Although she didn’t recognize her aunt at the time, Susan is grateful that by volunteering with Islands Hospice she was able to be near her dear aunt and hear her sweet voice and laughter during her last days.
When she is not volunteering, Susan works part-time at a bank and babysits her grandson. She also enjoys daily walks in the morning, relaxing with family on the weekends, and playing dominoes on Fridays with her sisters-in-law. The simple things in life bring Susan the most joy, and we feel lucky to be a part of it all and have her as a valued volunteer.
