Patient Benevolence Fund

MISSION: The Islands Hospice Benevolence Fund is designed to support Islands Hospice's mission of providing the highest quality, comprehensive hospice care focused on serving the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their loved ones.   

HISTORY: Islands Hospice was founded in 2008 as a faith-based nonprofit with the desire to bring care, comfort and compassion to those facing life-limiting illnesses and to those grieving the loss of a loved one. The Islands Hospice Benevolence Fund seeks to continue the charitable intent of it’s founder and current board members.

GUIDELINES: This fund is designed to assist family members with various uninsured expenses like funeral expenses, home comfort needs, family travel, etc. It is intended to be used at the suggestion f the clinical team as they provide the best care possible for their patient and loved ones.

Patients and/or their loved ones who are currently on service with Islands Hospice's Hospice Care, Supportive Services or Transitional Care are eligible for this program. Applicants must apply through their social worker. Payment of all awards is subject to availability of funds in the Benevolence Fund.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
  1. Priority of Need
    The amount available in the Benevolence Fund is generally limited to the contributions received and to certain investment income. Therefore, from time to time, the Committee may be required to make difficult choices among circumstances of legitimate and compelling need based on the priority of the need, as determined by the Committee in its sole discretion.
  2. Amount of Need
    The Committee shall have the sole discretion to determine the amount of each grant based on the applicant’s circumstances in relationship to the circumstances of other contemporaneous applicants and the amount then available in the Benevolence Fund.
  3. Personal Responsibility of the Applicant
    The Committee shall not award any amounts from the Benevolence Fund to any eligible patient whose situation, based on all relevant facts and circumstances, is clearly the result of financial and personal irresponsibility or repeated disregard of sound financial planning counsel.
